1:18 Coral Sea SBD Dauntless Preorders Open Now
Word late today from Merit International is that the first production sample has been completed and is shown here. We are still getting information about the 1:18 prebuilt SBD-3 Dauntless and the features it will have. The livery is from the Battle of the Coral Sea on this very first release. No pilots will come with the aircraft and no news whether they will be available in the near future. The aircraft is scheduled to begin production on February 1st in China. Only 1000 pieces of this first S1 aircraft will be made for distribution. Expect a sell out early in the Preorder Period which begins NOW. Deliveries are expected in April.
Word from the horse's mouth is that this piece is the forerunner of many more projects should it be successful. We hope the collecting community will get behind Merit and this project!!

YES!!!
The way to start a new year! Finally we get a plane that many of us have wanted and waited for, for a long time now. A very historic aircraft.
A plane that helped turn the tide of the war in the south Pacific.
Rob I put my money where my mouth is. I preordered two of these beauties. Thanks For the free shipping.
Now I wonder if the 1:32 F-4 Phantom repaint (Hopefully USAF Camo) will come out this summer.....OR maybe A 1:18 BBI Zero in the Solomon Islands Paint. Could be an interesting year??? JJ
Too bad about the no pilots. I think the pilot and gunner that came with the BBI 1:32 SBD really make that plane. I have mine hanging with the two canopies open. The pilot and gunner are installed and that display reminds me of the picture/footage that I have seen from WWII of an SBD flying just above some big clouds In the South Pacific.
I hope that some figures will be available for this fine aircraft. JJ
Thanks JJ!!
We still have a few of the 21st Century Corsair pilots that will fit in the front seat of the Dauntless. Taking it a step further, some very slight modifications will make it look dead-on accurate for even the fussiest collectors. They are available now and relatively cheap, too . . . just an idea . . .
The rear-seater is a tougher problem as it will take major surgery to get a 1:18 figure to fit in there.
Rob,
Hooray! I ordered my first Dauntless today, and after a mere 5 years of empty promises by others, I know that I will actually receive it.I am happy the Coral Sea paint scheme was first - I really like it. Nevertheless,I am confident that a Midway version will follow. and is on my acquisition list. I am also impressed by the quality here - the lines look really accurate and the detailing is at a level to be expected in a high end kit, The engine is a model by itself and offer great opportunities for super detailing. BBI has consistently improved with each of its releases - from the early (already impressive) jets through the Me 109 and the Japanese Zero and now the Dauntless, clearly another step forward.
I think this says the 1/18th model world is clearly still alive and is evolving, happily in a very postive direction. The move is away from mere toys and towards true collectors items, yet (at least when first released) within the reach of many. I think BBI knows this, is positioning itself to be the leader, and has figured out how to do it, through Merit. I do hope I am right!!
